I suspect the personal impact of Marx is overestimated. Political leaders in officially Marxist states almost never based their policies on his theories. Later period communist leaders may not have even read him. Had Russian or Chinese revolutionaries actually followed Marxist theories they would not even try to establish communist regimes in their countries.
