This seems to be an inherited feature from the LessWrong division between Main and Discussion. As it appears to me, the main distinction seems to be that Main has a blog-format and Discussion a forum-format -- with the exception that both have blog-like nesting of comments rather than forum-like chronological threading. In the Omnilibrium implementation, articles don't even show up as in Main, with the title + some text above the cut; here, it's just the titles, like on forums.
An alternative classification could be by topic category (Economics, Ideology, Social Issues etc.); of course, there's the problem that, if we had a General category, it would encompass most of the posts, because it's rare for a topic to fit neatly into one and just one category. Implementing tags for this purpose would be more flexible; however, that might bring its own problems. |
