What I find most interesting by these attempts to explain Trump away, is that in their focus on style they completely ignore the substance. Look at Trump's most popular position, namely his position on immigration. This position is only "controversial" in the sense that the elites are against it while everyone else is for it. This is a much bigger factor than Trump's style in his support, in fact his style is only relevant in that it made it possible for him to get away with taking the position he has (look at some of the dirty tricks levied against him when he first took his position to see why this is the case).

The point isn't to simply explain Trump away. It's to be cogniciant of the fact that the system used to be structured in a way that made it hard for outsiders to run to a system that makes it a lot easier because the news-economics shifted.

The news-economics are not simply changing back for the next election to what they were previously.

What's unique about Trump's position on immigration in contrast with other Republican's?
He threatens to stop free trade with Mexico if Mexico doesn't pay for the wall.

I don't think that the majority of the US public prefers that over the alternatives. I don't think that majority of the US wants to pay tariffs on Mexican products.

The other point is that Trumps wants to deport them and then bring them bad legally as Trump's son describes:
The point isnít just deporting them, itís deporting them and letting them back in legally. Heís been so clear about that and I know the liberal media wants to misconstrue it, but itís deporting them and letting them back legally.

On both issues I'm not clear that the average person on the street even understands what Trump wants to do.

What do you mean with "first took his position" the statements he made in 2013? The speech that he's running with talked about rapists?

Yes, for example.
